Thanks to their location on the body, the ankles are more susceptible to injury and than any other joint. Given this relative regularity of Anklemishaps, knowing the signs and symptoms of an ankle sprain can help ensure that you receive the medical care that you need in the event of trauma. Find out more about identifying ankle sprain symptoms and treatment by reading below, and for medical help, contact podiatrist Dr. Jacqueline Babol at Spokane Foot and Ankle Clinic with locations in Spokane, WA, Hayden, ID, and Kellogg, ID.

What Is a Sprained Ankle?
Sprained ankles occur when the ligaments in the ankle become torn or stretched after trauma to the joint, often from a sudden twisting, rolling, or jerking action. Understandably, people who participate in activities and sports that often use these kinds of emotions are more susceptible to ankle sprains, though this condition can happen to anyone.

Sprained Ankle Symptoms
The symptoms of a sprained ankle are often instantly obvious, although they may take some time to appear. They include:

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Joint stiffness
  • Inability of the ankle to bear weight

Treatment Approaches
Sprained ankle treatments often begin with the RICE method:

  • Rest: Rest the ankle as much as possible and use crutches for walking to avoid placing weight on the foot.
  • Ice: Ice the ankle several times a day for about 10 minutes each time.
  • Compression: Use a compression band to wrap the ankle to help reduce swelling.
  • Elevation: Keep the ankle elevated above the heart.

However, if the RICE method does not produce successful results, your podiatrist may suggest a brace or splint. Over-the-counter or prescription medications may also help relieve pain and swelling. In serious or recurring sprains, surgery may be necessary to repair the affected ligaments.
